If you download files from the Flotilla 12-10 web site, everything should happen automatically. Specifically, if you receive compressed files, so-called "zipped" files, I will wrap them in a program which "unzips" them for you. You don't need any other programs. The rest of the world, including the Auxiliary, won't be that nice to you.

However, you really should think about being able to "unzip" files.

As the Internet becomes more useful and the Auxiliary relies more and more on the World Wide Web to deliver information, you really want to be able to "unzip" files. What does it mean to "unzip" a file?

One or more files can be compressed into one file. One very popular format for this is called "Zip" and a compressed file has the extension '.zip'. The important feature about a zip file for you is that the individual files will be organized into folders as the original author intended. Another, but not crucial feature, is that you can download many files at once. The original idea of compression was to make smaller files but that is not very important now that computers have dramatically increased speeds and capacity.

You can download a free program 'ZipCentral', which will unzip compressed files. (It will also zip files. You will probably not use this feature if you don't already have such a program.)

Download ZipCentral This page contains a link to download the program installer. It also contains brief instructions on how to install the program and use it to unzip files. Read those instructions before downloading the installer.
